Parents’ Council sponsors Service Recognition

In honor and appreciation of the dedication of our faculty and staff, this special ceremony is established to mark milestones of service to the Latin community. Launched in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Latin, teachers and staff are recognized for every 5 years of service.

Having started at Latin in 1970 - Latin’s very first year - Barbara Kane, Bob Robinson, Ceres Vandiver and Janice Privette were recognized for 25 years of service at the 1995 Service Recognition ceremony.

“Laura” Sculpture Installed

Many beautiful pieces of art grace our campus and none are more recognizable than Laura.  Located in the courtyard adjacent to Belk Gym, this bronze creation by Richard Hallier is one of several gifts from the Irwin Belk family. Latin’s first public art acquisition, Laura exemplifies the harmony between the human element – the families that make our school – and the natural setting we try to care for and protect.

When her surrogate parent, Ike Belk, first asked me whether or not I would like to have Laura join our family, I leapt at the chance. As Ike and I toured the grounds, trying to decide which division Laura would enter, I yielded to parental wishes: Ike declared that she should be here, in this spot.

CLS Wrestling wins first CISAA trophy

While Latin boasts of its excellent sports programs, Wrestling may rightfully be considered a dynasty. Winning our first CISAA trophy in 1997 - the same year that Coach Richard Fletcher ’85 is named Charlotte Observer Coach of the Year - the Mat Hawks consistently win conference, state and even national titles.

Latin’s Service Society Created

Service to others has long been a part of Latin's history with popular clubs like The Interact Club and the Keywanettes established in its early years. Our students feel the responsibility to serve in hundreds of different ways. While community service is voluntary, Latin's Service Society encourages Upper School students to participate in the Community Service Program and recognizes students who make significant contributions through service.

CLS joins the World Wide Web

Latin jumps from a mere homepage (built in 1997) to the World Wide Web by launching its own website in 1999. Funded by partnerships between the school, the Parents’ Council and the Alumni Association, it touts a Master and Custom Calendar, directories and Latin community news. MyLatin is introduced in 2002 and continues to further the capability and ease of connecting with all things Latin.
